PROJECTS:
Habitat Restoration |
Streamside planting
The San Francisquito Watershed Council has adopted nine riparian (streamside) native plant revegetation sites throughout the watershed. At each site, volunteers have removed non-native invasive plants and begun replanting with native grasses, flowering shrubs, and trees. All plants used at the sites are grown at Acterra's Native Plant Nursery.
Invasive weed removal
At more than 20 other sites around the watershed, the Watershed Council works to remove infestations of invasive plants, which outcompete and displace native vegetation. The Watershed Council sponsors volunteer workdays to remove French broom. Its staff have been working to eradicate Arundo donax from the watershed since 2000.
Creek clean-ups
Volunteers improve habitat and the health of the creek by participating in creek clean-ups. Each year they remove hundreds of bags of trash, plus large debris such as shopping carts, bicycles, and lawnmowers. These clean-ups are usually organized for Earth Day (April), National River Cleanup Day (May), and International Coastal Cleanup Day (September).
Since 1999, more than 3,000 volunteers have pitched in to help restore native habitat at our nine sites along the creek! Learn how you can volunteer in the Get Involved section.
